How to Make a Barbecue Grill by Yourself

Many of us cannot imagine summer holidays without delicious shashliks in nature. However, to cook them, you need a barbecue grill. You can also prepare grilled vegetables or barbecue with it. Such an item is necessary both for those who live in apartments and go on trips, and for those who live in private houses and can place the grill in their yard.

To avoid spending money on a purchased one, you can craft it by yourself. Of course, this requires some skills, material, and a set of tools.

It is worth noting that the structure can be made either with a welding machine or with bolts and nuts. This construction is more portable and lighter. However, due to the thin metal, it may rust or burn out quite quickly.

What Tools Are Needed

You will need the following tools:

  • center punch;
  • pliers;
  • metal ruler;
  • metal marker or tailor's chalk;
  • drill and drill press;
  • angle grinder;
  • welding machine;
  • file.

It is worth noting that, in addition to standard sheet metal, you can use available materials. For example, you can make a grill from old barrels or propane tanks, coffee tables, or car rims.

Materials Used

One of the most common materials is cast iron. Its advantages include the ability to retain heat for a long time, even heat distribution, and heat accumulation. It is durable, as it can serve you for several decades with proper use.

The drawbacks include:

  • high weight;
  • difficulties in transportation;
  • susceptibility to temperature fluctuations;
  • corrosion when interacting with water.

A grill made from medical or food-grade steel (AISI 304 grade steel is best) is one of the strongest and most durable. Such products do not burn out for a long time and are resistant to deformation.

For extra strength, you can add reinforcement ribs. They withstand mechanical load and do not rust. However, one significant downside is that the material is very expensive.

The most common grills are made from heat-resistant steel (e.g., grade 45, 10Г2, 09Г2С). They are durable, strong, withstand high temperatures, and retain heat for a long time.

For the stands and legs, square or round rods, or reinforcement with a cross-section of at least 10 mm are suitable.

The grill grates for barbecue can be made from stainless steel wire with a cross-section of 3-4 mm. It is worth noting that the optimal thickness of the sheet metal is more than 4 mm. Then, the product will be strong, will not burn out, and you can burn both firewood and coal in it.

How to Make a Collapsible Barbecue Grill

This type of grill is lightweight, compact, and indispensable when you go on nature trips or hikes. One of its advantages is that it can be assembled multiple times. The elements of such a grill are connected by bolts, hinges, and nuts.

First, you need to determine the dimensions of the product that will be optimal for you. At the same time, the width of the grill should correspond to the length of the skewers, and its length should accommodate the optimal number of them for you.

It is worth noting that the structure should not be too large. This will significantly prolong the burning process.

Stages

  1. The first stage is creating the drawing. It will help properly arrange the structural elements.
  2. Using a tape measure, mark the side walls, rear and front walls, and bottom on the metal sheet with a thickness of 2-4 mm.
  3. You will also need a 25x25 metal angle to create the frame and legs.

Stages of manufacture:

  1. Cut the metal sheet along the marks with a saw or angle grinder.
  2. Bend the lower part of the side walls with a hammer, and assemble the box.
  3. Also, use the angle grinder to make grooves on the parts to secure them together.
  4. Insert the walls into the grooves of the base and secure the bottom part.
  5. Use the angle grinder to make notched holes for the skewers on the sides.
  6. Make holes with a diameter of about 12 mm at a distance of about 60 mm from each other at the very bottom of the bottom and the long sides.
  7. For convenience, weld handles onto the short elements of the box.
  8. Assemble everything together using nuts and bolts.

Welded Barbecue Grill

This grill has a frame that should be smaller than the base. The optimal dimensions are 570 mm in length and 230 mm in width.

For the bottom, use sheet metal made of stainless heat-resistant steel or other materials that do not deform when heated.

  1. As with the collapsible grill, the first stage of creation is to make the drawing, and then cut individual fragments with an angle grinder.
  2. Then, clean the sharp, uneven edges with a grinder.
  3. Assemble the firebox from the parts, joining and welding the edges from the inside to form the box.

The welds can be non-continuous, as this will facilitate better combustion by allowing additional oxygen.

Next, weld the legs made from metal pipes with a diameter of 25-32 mm to the box. The lower parts should rest on welded pieces with a diameter of 50 mm for better stability.

If the thickness of the sheet metal for the box does not exceed 2 mm, reinforce the walls with angular steel profiles or rectangular-section pipes.

It is worth noting that the welded construction is more reliable and durable. However, to make it, you need welding skills and to make the welds carefully. This method is not suitable for very thin steel with a thickness of less than 1.5 mm.

It is also important to follow certain safety rules when creating the barbecue and wear protective gear: glasses, gloves, and an apron.

All the materials necessary for making the barbecue can be purchased at the metal bases of the UTMK company. Bending and cutting of rolled metal are also available, and delivery is made to all settlements in Ukraine for orders of one ton or more.

Clients from Poland, Moldova, and France can make a purchase in the cities of Łódź, Warsaw, Kraków, and Poznań. In Poland, delivery is made to any settlement, including Jelenia Góra, Bolesławiec, and Wałbrzych. Purchases can be made by phone or online. Discount systems are available for wholesale buyers.
