It’s great when there’s an opportunity to maintain good well-being and physical fitness. In practice, it doesn’t take much effort: just a personal desire and a pull-up bar outside your window for exercises.
The advantage of this gymnastic equipment is its versatility and wide functionality. It has a simple design suitable for any age, and you can even make it yourself with a list of accessible materials and tools.
A street pull-up bar can have various configurations and parameters, but it’s worth noting that during workouts, the structure experiences significant loads—more than twice the weight of a person. If spins or powerful jumps are performed, the load can increase fourfold. Therefore, when building a pull-up bar, you need to ensure it can withstand a minimum weight of 600-750 kg.
What You Need in Your Arsenal
First, decide on the shape of the structure: whether it will be a simple or cascading design, with a rope or rings, parallel bars, or a basketball hoop.
To build a standard U-shaped apparatus, you’ll need:
- two steel pipes with a diameter of 100 mm and a length of 3 m (wall thickness at least 3 mm), which can also be rectangular;
- a section of round pipe with a diameter of 30-35 mm and a length of 1.5 m for the crossbar (wall thickness at least 3 mm);
- a grinding machine;
- an angle grinder;
- a tape measure;
- welding equipment;
- a drill;
- a level;
- 1 kg of electrodes;
- cement, gravel, sand;
- bitumen coating;
- paint, brushes;
- a hammer;
- a shovel, bucket.
You’ll also need to acquire steel squares with dimensions of 50x50x3 or 60x60x2. These are necessary for the supports. For these purposes, a round 80x2 pipe is also suitable—it’s more flexible and better withstands bending.
Reinforcement bars can be used as fasteners for the supports.
Where to Start
Before starting work on creating a street pull-up bar with your own hands, you need to make a blueprint. To speed up the process, consider who the apparatus is intended for—children or adults.
The optimal cross-sectional diameter of the crossbar pipe can be determined with a simple calculation: divide the width of your palm at the base of your fingers by 3 to get the required pipe diameter.
How to Choose Materials
A pull-up bar is an apparatus entirely made of metal. This type of construction will be safe and durable. Use a round pipe made of structural steel with a diameter of 26-40 mm and a wall thickness of at least 3 mm, made from alloyed or structural steel. Note that thin-walled options made of food-grade stainless steel are unsuitable—they won’t withstand such loads and will deform quickly.
Where to Install the Pull-Up Bar
A street pull-up bar should be installed on a flat surface, away from poles, fences, and walls.
For increased safety during workouts, choose soft ground, a lawn, or a special rubber coating.
It’s best to place it in an open area but in the shade of trees so it’s not too hot in summer, the metal doesn’t overheat in the sun, and branches don’t interfere with exercises.
Also, avoid installing it in lowlands or areas with high groundwater levels. The foundation depth for concreting should exceed the soil freezing depth by 20 cm.
Features of Creating a Standard Street Pull-Up Bar
It’s worth noting that it’s better to work with an assistant. Strictly maintain the alignment of elements and don’t skimp on material quality.
- On the site, use a shovel or auger to dig holes up to 70 cm deep, then add a sand cushion and compact it to a 10 cm layer.
- Cut the pipes into segments according to the blueprint.
- Use a drill or grinder to make holes in the supports where the crossbar will be inserted.
- Lay the supports parallel on the ground and weld the crossbar. Once the welds cool, process them with a grinder.
- Install the U-shaped structure into the holes and concrete it with a mixture of M500 cement, gravel (5-20 fraction), and sand in a 1:4:2 ratio.
- Use a construction level to check the accuracy of the installation and the parallelism of the pipes.
- Allow the concrete to cure fully for 48 hours.
- Afterward, paint the surfaces. It’s best to use paints with a “hammer effect”—they allow painting in one layer, and the hammer effect reduces slipping during exercises.
A children’s pull-up bar should be made according to parameters matching the child’s age and height. It can be additionally equipped with a Swedish wall, rope, or parallel bars. Ergonomic steps are also a must to reach the crossbar without jumping.
For little ones, it’s better to place a rubber mat on the ground to protect against injuries in case of a fall.
