Description
Steel 38KhN3MFA is a high-strength alloyed structural steel belonging to the class of chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels with the addition of vanadium. Due to its unique combination of high strength, toughness, wear resistance, and resistance to cyclic loads, it is ideally suited for components operating under extreme static, dynamic, and impact loads, as well as at elevated temperatures.
Main Characteristics
- Purpose: Highly critical components operating under high loads.
- Key properties: High strength, hardenability, toughness, and wear resistance.
- Heat treatment: Quenching and high tempering.
- Weldability: Limited (requires special techniques).
- Standards: GOST 4543-71, TU 14-1-323-72.
Chemical Composition and Role of Elements
- Carbon (C): 0.35-0.42% — the primary element determining strength and hardness.
- Chromium (Cr): 1.3-1.7% — enhances hardenability, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance.
- Nickel (Ni): 2.75-3.25% — provides exceptional toughness, impact strength, and hardenability in large cross-sections.
- Molybdenum (Mo): 0.2-0.3% — improves heat resistance and resistance to tempering.
- Vanadium (V): 0.08-0.15% — refines grain structure, significantly improving strength, toughness, and wear resistance.
- Manganese (Mn) and Silicon (Si): Enhance hardenability and steel structure.
- Sulfur (S) and Phosphorus (P): Content is controlled (not exceeding 0.025%) to ensure high mechanical properties.
Applications and Industries
Steel 38KhN3MFA is used for manufacturing critical components in various industries:
- Aviation industry: Crankshafts, connecting rods, and fasteners for aircraft engines.
- Heavy machinery: Heavy-duty gears, shafts, and power transmissions.
- Energy sector: Components for high-power diesel engines.
- Mining industry: Equipment components subjected to high impact loads.
Forms of Supply and European Equivalents
Steel 38KhN3MFA is supplied in various forms compliant with GOST, DSTU, and European standards:
- Forgings (GOST 8479-70): Equivalent per EN — EN 10222-1 (forgings and forged steel products).
- Sectional and shaped rolled products (GOST 1133-71, GOST 2590-2006): Equivalent per EN — EN 10025 (structural steel rolled products).
- Sheets and strips (GOST 103-2006): Equivalent per EN — EN 10130 (cold-rolled steel) and EN 10052 (sheets and strips).
- Calibrated rolled products (GOST 1051-73, GOST 14955-77): Equivalent per EN — EN 10025 (hot-rolled products) and EN 10210 (hot-rolled profile pipes).
