Calculation of the weight and volume of the forging

When drawing up design and technical documentation, as well as when placing an order for rolled metal, it is necessary to accurately calculate the required quantity. Since the weight of rolled products is the main equivalent when it is shipped, this parameter is determined.

Forgings come in round and square sections. To determine the weight of a round forging, you first need to calculate its volume (according to the cylinder volume formula):

V = πr²h,

where r – forging radius (half the diameter), and h – its length. Then the weight of the forging is calculated:

m = ρV,

where ρ – this is the specific gravity of steel (it is necessary to specify according to a special table, in accordance with the grade). If we are talking about forgings of square section, then the volume is determined by the formula:

V = a²h,

where a – side of square, h – forging length.

The weight of the forging is calculated using the same formula m = ρV. Having learned the weight of one product, you can easily determine the required total number of blanks. The ability to calculate the weight of rolled metal is necessary for accurate financial and accounting, calculation of storage and transportation costs. In addition, the calculation of the weight of forgings is mandatory to control the correct shipment of goods: the buyer can easily determine whether the declared weight is true by simply counting the number of shipped blanks.
