Types and types of forgings

Forgings – these are draft blanks, from which subsequently using the preliminary and final metalworking produce various parts. Advantages of forged rolled metal products: affordable cost and maximum conformity of dimensions and shapes to the required product. Due to the fact that forging exactly matches the prototype part, its processing is simplified and chip costs are minimized.

What are forgings?

First of all, this type of rolled metal is distinguished by its profile: they are round and rectangular (most often – square). The widest application received round blanks, it is from them that most parts and structures are made.

According to the method of production, forgings are classified as follows:

• made by free forging;
• stamped.

The former are more affordable, in their production the product is gradually given the required shape by forging. When stamped, the part immediately takes its shape under the influence of a stamping press. Such products are characterized by maximum precision and high surface quality.

The most extensive classification of forgings – by type and grade of steel from which they are made.

• Carbon blanks are used to produce extremely strong parts.
• Alloyed forgings are made from alloyed steel grades, they can have various specific characteristics – high strength, wear resistance, elasticity, heat resistance, etc.
• Blanks from tool steels are used for the manufacture of various equipment and tools: milling cutters, cutters, dies, etc.
• Stainless steel forgings are characterized by high corrosion resistance. They are used to make parts that will function in a humid or aggressive environment.

The production and assortment of forged metal products in our country is regulated by several main standards: GOST 8479-70 "Forgings from structural carbon and alloy steel" and GOST 7505-89 "Stamped steel forgings". In addition, stainless forged products are described in GOST 25054-81 "Forgings from corrosion-resistant steels and alloys", and GOST 7829-70 regulates the production of forged blanks on special hammer units.
